Uttariya is a piece of cloth used in ancient India to cover the upper part of the body. It used to hang from the neck to drape over the arms. It was the older version of a scarf or stole. Uttariya was used in olden times in conglomeration with antariya or dhoti which was tied with a kayabandh or a sash. Though the term Uttariya has become archaic in modern vocabulary, the use of uttariya continues in another avatar called the stole. The variety of stoles available in India in myriads of material bears testimony to the fact that the traditional uttariya worn by the ancient ladies still continues though in a slightly varied form
