Polo is supposed to have been invented by Iranian tribes in the 19th century A.D. Gradually it spread to the east and even entered Japan. Polo entered India during the last part of the 12th century. Initially it captured the imagination of the royal classes in the North especially the Rajput rulers. However, in the north eastern state of Manipur polo was never an elitist sport. Anybody owning a horse could play the game. The British had rediscovered the game in Manipur in the early 19th century where it is called ‘Sagol Kangjei’. Today polo is played by a selection of people but in Manipur the game is still played by anybody who owns a horse. Read on more with www.bestindiansites.com for more information on polo.
