Incorporated in the year 1959, Indian Oil is the largest organization in the oil and gas sector in India today. With annual revenue of around Rs. 4 lakh crore for the financial year 2011-12, it is ranked 83 in the Fortune Global 500 largest companies list of year 2012. It is involved in the manufacturing and marketing of various products like indane gas, petrol, diesel, crude oil, kerosene etc. The company alongwith its subsidiaries holds maximum market share of petroleum products. With a strong workforce of more than 34,000, it provides its services in every nook and corner of India.
This company has the credit for being the first refinery to process indigenous crude oil right after nationalization and the first to implement ERP solutions. It has refineries in Mumbai and Kochi, and has products like natural gas, petroleum and petrochemicals.
With an annual turnover of Rs. 1.7 lakh crores for financial year 2011-12, Hindustan Petroleum is an oil and gas company under the Government of India. Commonly known as HPCL, it has products like lubricants, LPG, aviation fuel etc.

Founded in 1956, this oil and gas firm today has the recognition of producing the largest quantities of crude oil (77%) and natural gas (81%) in the country. Essar Oil, a part of the Essar Group, is involved in the exploration, production, refining and marketing oil and gas. Headquartered in Mumbai, the company has a net annual income of 2,155 crore (2011). Its products include petrochemicals, crude oil, and aviation turbine fuel.
MRPL was founded in 1988 and is at present a subsidiary of oil and gas giant, ONGC. It is involved in refining and processing oil into premium qualities of diesel and unleaded petrol. This PSU was declared a Miniratna in 2007 and has won the award for the ‘Refinery of the Year’ in 2010 by the oil and gas industry.
Incorporated in 1984, GAIL is a PSU involved in production, marketing and transmission of natural gas and LPG. The company also generated liquid hydrocarbons and petrochemicals. It is famed for working on one of the largest natural gas pipeline projects in the world.
CPCL is a state owned organization in the oil and gas sector involved in refining oil and producing petrol, LPG, petrochemicals, bitumen, lube base stocks, kerosene and high speed diesel. This PSU was founded in 1965 and has a throughput (crude) of about 10.5 million metric tonnes for year 2011-12.
This PSU is a joint venture between the leading oil and gas organizations in India, GAIL, BPCL, ONGC and Indian Oil. It generates an annual revenue of about Rs. 13,000 crore (2011) and deals in import of liquefied natural gas, and production of lubricants, petrochemicals and fuels.
Headquartered in Gurgaon, Cairn India is known to be among the largest independent oil and gas companies in the country. It is involved in the exploration, production and transportation of oil and gas. The company is famous for its Mangala oil field in Rajasthan, which is the largest onshore one in India.
